Portuguese, Hunikui with English subtitles
Echoing the notion of the counter-ethnographic gaze, I’ve Already Become an Image is a lesson in decolonial cinema and audiovisual sovereignty. Huni Kuin filmmaker Zezinho Yube takes us through the evolving relationship of the Huni Kuin people with recorded audiovisual images, as they define the terms of their own representation. Repurposing and re-signifying archival analogue footage – originally filmed by white outsiders within the community decades ago – alongside digital footage of past and present political resistances by Huni Kuin videographers, the film bears witness to their resistance and community organisation. As part of the collective Vídeo nas Aldeias, it echoes Wayuu filmmaker David Hernandez Palmar’s (Iipuana Clan) statement on audiovisual freedom: “Audiovisual sovereignty is being built when Indigenous filmmakers decide who their audience is or what direction they want to take, whether it is for the community itself or to speak to the world.”
