Umbra is devoted to ordinary and rare visual phenomena that occur in nature. These ancient and naturally occurring projections can be viewed as images, independent of culture and equipment, that were present long before the evolution of humankind. Featuring unparalleled immateriality and fragility, they are forerunners of the cinematic image. A visual dialogue evolves between phenomenon and apparatus, archetype and image, self and self-perception. Umbra won the Golden Bear for best short film at the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival.
